faultline

Faultline is a Western themed haunt maze and scare zone concept created for the annual Haunt Comp.

Prospectors pierce an ancient mineral lifeform beneath the desert, unleashing an organism that grows by calcifying and absorbing the living. As the town begins to fracture, guests join a desperate search party into the mines, passing through the buried remains of settlements the organism has already consumed.

digging into the Faultline

As Project Director, I worked across the different creative and technical disciplines to keep the project cohesive while giving each team member ownership over their area. I was particularly involved in Writing and Elevations, while also helping develop the wider worldbuilding, challenging ideas and considering how each decision contributed to the narrative and guest experience.

The initial idea of descending through different layers was developed by our Creative Director, Kier Marshall. Working from this foundation alongside Concept Artist Josh Halbedl, I helped develop the one-sheet and story beats from ideas explored collectively during the Blue Sky process. Josh’s concept art became an important part of this development, helping shape the character designs and establish the visual identity of Gravestone Gulch and its inhabitants.

My other major contribution was producing the project’s elevations in SketchUp. This involved translating elements of the concept into detailed drawings and coordinating with Set Designer Cameron Whiteside to ensure they aligned with the wider layout. Working with Technical Director Sam Weaver also developed my understanding of how show technology, including AV placements, should be incorporated and communicated within these drawings.

Working across these disciplines gave me the opportunity to expand my understanding of haunt design and operations while drawing on the specialist experience within the team. Operations Director David Wilson’s work on the attraction SOP was particularly valuable in developing my understanding of the operational considerations behind a haunt and how those requirements influence the design itself.

Bringing these different areas together was central to my role throughout Faultline. The project allowed me to apply my existing experience in creative project direction while developing a much stronger understanding of how narrative, scenic design, technical systems and operations combine within a haunt experience.
